Just before Christmas I got my book cover for book three in my teen fantasy trilogy. I’m so excited with how it turned out. The cover is beautiful, as alwasy, designed by the amazing and talented Kirk DouPonce of DogEared Design.
Book covers are very important, aren’t they? When I’m walking though a store or even clicking through cyberspace, a good book cover can catch my eye and stop me in my tracks. Book covers are supposed to represent the story inside the cover.
Sometimes that’s difficult for a cover designer to do. In some large publishing houses, the graphic artists are given an information sheet that the author filled out and maybe a few ideas from the editor. Kirk DouPonce likes to read the books before he designs the cover. This way he has a good feel for the story before he gets ready to create. If you like graphic design, you might consider a carrer as a graphic artist. Kirk has some neat tutorials where he walks the viewer through some techniques for creating a book covers. If you are into Photoshop, it’s pretty facinating stuff. Here is the link: http://dogearedtutorials.com/
One thing I love about my book covers, is that they all line up in a row. Check it out! Doesn’t it make you want to pick up the book and see what’s inside?
